A new era in
occupational hygiene -
Outline of the scientific programme
Globalisation of the world's economy is one important factor that influences the working life across the borders of "developed" and "less developed" nations. Globalisation seems to be the single force that more than others will define the conditions of work for a large part of the world's population in the next century. Globalisation is an important part of the challenges of a new era and will be a keyword for the opening session of the conference.
IOHA Cairns 2000 focused on working conditions in developing countries. IOHA Bergen 2002 wants to make a good connection to "down under" by bringing up occupational health consequences of globalisation.
Managing occupational risks in a new era -
(Sponsored by AIHA)
The session will address new challenges and solutions for managing occupational health. The following subjects will be covered:
- HSE-management systems for the future, experience and recent developments
- New trends in performance measurements/indicators
- Risk communication in the Internet age
Working conditions in the construction industry
(Sponsored by Dutch OHA)
Three topics will be covered in this session:
- Working conditions at the design stage
- Working conditions during construction
- Conflicts of interest in the construction industry. Occupational health vs.
environmental concern, working conditions vs. economical factors etc.
Workplaces related to the sea and the coast
The sea is probably the most important infrastructure that connects people all over the world. The majority of the world's population lives in coastal areas and is in some way dependent on sea-based activities. The conference will focus on occupational health and hygiene conditions at workplaces related to sea by organising sessions based on the main branches:
- Offshore petroleum industry
- Fishing and fish farming
- Shipbuilding and shipping
Occupational health conditions in extreme environments
Three parallel sessions will focus on occupational health and hygiene related to working conditions that exceed normality.
- Temperature extremes
- Shift work (Sponsored by British OHS)
- Hyperbaric conditions
Chemical allergens and dermal exposure
(sponsored by Swedish OHA)
- Current methodology on dermal exposure assessments
- Measurements of dermal absorption, principles and uncertainties
- Contact allergy - mechanisms and prevention
Exposure assessment
- Organics solvents - round table session
- Bioaerosols
- New achievements in sampling and measurement methodology
- General occupational hygiene - physical factors
Professional development courses (PDC)
- Introduction to mathematical modelling of exposure
- Risk reduction through efficient use of material data sheets
- Use of video techniques to visualise real time exposure
- Status and recent developments within surface treatment products and
technology. What are the occupational health challenges?
- Creating new workplaces. How to exploit the design and engineering phase of
new buildings to achieve the best results
- The Internet. How to survive between the Stone Age and information overload. Best practise in occupational hygiene net navigation.
